Haunted Places in Dallas, Texas

Updated on July 9, 2012

I've always been fascinated by real life ghost stories. I even watch silly shows of grown men going into a dark building yelling at ghosts to come out only to turn and run screaming like little girls when they hear a tap.

My hometown of Dallas, Texas is probably not what comes to your mind when you think of haunted places. And though it's a relatively young town there are still a few places that claim to be haunted.

The Stoneleigh Hotel

Is the Stoneleigh Hotel in Dallas' Uptown district haunted? Paula Abdul would say yes. Recently, The X Factor judges, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and L.A. Reid were spooked when staying in this luxury hotel.

They're not the only people to have paranormal experiences in the Stoneleigh Hotel. Other guests have reported seeing people standing in their rooms, feeling like someone is watching them, lights flickering and water faucets turning off and on. Perhaps the place is so nice, people don't want to leave... even after they're dead.

White Rock Lake - Lady of the Lake

The Lady of White Rock Lake is one of Dallas' best known ghost stories. Many people claim to have seen the lady of white rock lake and if you're from the area you're probably very familiar with this story.

People claim they were driving by White Rock Lake at night when they see a girl in a white dress, soaking wet, standing on the side of the road trying to get a ride from someone. When they pull over she tells them that she was in a boat that turned over and she needs to get home. Then she gives them the address to her home on Greenville Ave. and gets in the back seat. When they all arrive at her home they turn around to see that she has disappeared but the seat where she sat is soaking wet. How annoying.

The Adolphus Hotel

This historic hotel was built in 1912 by the founder of the Anheuser-Busch company, Adolphus Busch. In the 1930s it hosted many big band musicians of the time and is apparently now the host of a ghost bride that hanged herself after being stood up at the alter. Now the sad woman in white wanders the halls appearing to guests. People have also reported hearing a big band playing in the closed off ballroom, or people walking in the hallway. Guests have also reported being kept awake by someone playing on a piano.

Snuffer's

At Snuffer's Restaurant & Bar in Lower Greenville, you can get a great hamburger, some of the best cheese fries in Dallas, and a chance to meet the dead! Apparently after the restaurant was remodeled, ghosts began to appear. If there's anything that I've learned from watching ghost hunting shows it's that ghosts are like dust. Construction stirs them up.

People have experienced hanging lamps swinging in unison, people that appear and disappear and cold spots.

All this talk about cheese fries is making me hungry. Maybe I should ghost hunt down at Snuffer's.

Majestic Theater

The Majestic Theater in downtown Dallas opened as a vaudeville theater in 1921. The theater hosted many famous acts including Houdini. The place is still open today as a performing arts theater and is apparently haunted by a benefactor named Karl Hoblitzelle.

Employees and visitors have reported that Karl moves backdrops and can be seen in the balcony but vanishes when someone goes to investigate. People have also attributed odd smells to ghosts. I swear it wasn't me. It was Karl!
