Top 5 Free Bible Apps for Apple iPhone or iPad
Reading the Bible on a Phone or Tablet
I'm starting to do more and more reading on my tablet instead on my physical Bible. Earlier I made a post about my favorite Bible apps for Android so I thought today I'd make a post for my favorite Bible apps for the iPhone or iPad.
Blue Letter Bible
Blue Letter Bible is designed to be used on an iPhone or an iPad. There is no Android version as far as I can tell. It's an iPhone version of their very useful website blueletterbible.org. Almost everything you can do on the website can be done on the app. The iPhone app allows you to download over 30 bible translations in English and other languages including Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Korean, German, Russian, Slovok, Croatian, French, and many more. With an internet connection you have access to a commentary on any passage. It also includes a Strong's Concordance and dictionaries. You can highlight your favorite passages and add bookmarks. The design looks a bit like something you'd see on the web in the 90s. But it is completely functional and has many useful features.
ESV Bible
ESV Bible App is an app for the iPhone or iPad that is simply the ESV Bible. This is the translation I like to read the most. The design of this app is nice and it is very easy to navigate. It does not have commentaries or dictionaries like the other apps listed. But if you just want an app to read the Bible on your iPhone this will do the job. It will also allow you to highlight, bookmark and share verses with friends and family.
Bible by YouVersion
YouVersion's Bible app is one of the most popular Bible apps for iPhone or iPad. It offers a huge collection of Bible versions. It also offers many reading plans to help you get into the Word and to track your progress. It will allow you to take notes and view notes that other people have made. You can also bookmark your favorite verses or share them with family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. The layout of this app is nice and they continue to make many improvements to it.
Bible.Is
The Bible.is app is an audio version of the Bible for the iPhone or iPad. They have over 600 languages of audio Bibles. If you're on the go and want to listen to a section of the Bible then Bible.is is the perfect app. It also includes a few reading plans and it will let you highlight or bookmark passages. If you download the Bible.is iPhone app then you also have access to The Jesus Film.
PocketSword
PocketSword is an iPhone and iPad app built on the SWORD backend developed by the CrossWire Bible Society. It has many translations of the Bible available for download and many commentaries including Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary on the Whole Bible, John Wesley's Notes on the Bible, Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, and many more. It includes a concordance and dictionaries. This app is great for Bible study on the iPhone or iPad.
What's your favorite?
Do you have a favorite that I didn't list here? Let me know. I'm always looking for new, better apps.
